Where to Stay and What to Eat

Little%252BArrow.jpg

We recommend staying in Townsend (the Quieter Side of the Smokies) for your grandtrip. Little Arrow is our first choice. They offer everything from camping sites to cabins, as well as tiny homes and yurts.

Donut Friar

Donut Friar.jpg

Bring cash to try this longstanding tradition in Gatlinburg. Coffee, hot chocolate and donuts is a grand treat!

PP.jpg

The Grands visited this iconic Gatlinburg restaurant for “pancakes shaped like bears in snow”. Grandbuck also recommends the French Toast!

Huck+Finn.jpg

Grandnan is partial to catfish, but you will find all the southern delicacies at this family-owned favorite in Pigeon Forge. See if you can get your grands to try frog legs and fried green tomatoes!

Fannies.jpg

While in Gatlinburg, play some traditional carnival games with your grands while snacking on corn dogs and shaved ice.

Chimneys.jpg

Hands down our favorite place to picnic, but get here early to be near the water. Tables and grills are provided at each parking spot. This is where the grands looked for “salamanders red, green, and brown”.

Burger.jpg

A Townsend treasure, be prepared to stand in line for burgers and ice cream. Dog treats are also on the menu if pets are included in your grandtrips!

Tremont.jpg

Another favorite picnic spot, close to all Gatlinburg attractions but without the crowds and craziness. Find a picnic table by the stream and let the grands explore the water and playground. Bring a basketball and tennis rackets for some teachable sports moments.

What to Do

Heritage+Center.jpg

Time travel with your grands back to the 1800’s at the Historic Village. A hands-on museum which authentically reflects a simpler time. Check their calendar for concerts and events as well.

Missing+Link.jpg

Drive the 16 mile Missing Link with breathtaking views in any season. Plenty of pull-offs for pictures but no stores so bring snacks and water.

River+Rat.jpg

“Tubing down a river slow” is a grand way to spend a summer afternoon. Be sure to check the water levels; it’s no fun to walk a tube over a rocky riverbed. Trust us- we’ve done it.

Salt.jpg

See who can find the most unique pair of shakers here. A fun and memorable stop that is worth the $3 admission.

Candy+Kitchen.jpg

Stock up on taffy and chocolate bears for your grands to take home to their parents. Watching the candy making is mesmerizing and free!

Dollywood.jpg

“Made by a lady whose hair is tall”

We normally leave the large amusement parks to the parents, but Dollywood is an exception. The rides and games for kids are balanced out perfectly with great food and shows for grandparents. Download our Playlist which includes several Dolly songs to prepare for the day!

Goats on Roof.jpg

Obviously, this can’t be missed! Feed the goats, ride a coaster, mine for gems, and enjoy a sweet treat.

Cades+cove.jpg

Our recommendation for Cades Cove is to go early or late. This drive can get very long for little ones unless a bear sighting occurs. If you go late, stop and park at Dan Lawson’s place and wait for the fireflies to fill the fields across the street.

Connecting Through Music

Music is an important part of our grandtrips and we are intentional about the songs we listen to with our grands. Mixing oldies and new favorites gets everyone singing!
